  • One of our officers stopped a vehicle for having an expired registration and defective brake light. Upon approaching the driver’s window, the officer could smell the odor of marijuana emitting from within. A subsequent search based on probable cause revealed a small amount of marijuana and a handgun. A check of the gun through the GCIC computer system suggested that the weapon had been reported stolen. When officers attempted to obtain a confirmation, however, the response was severely delayed. As a result, the firearm was taken into police custody for further investigation, and the driver was released from the scene on citations.

Later that evening, officers received confirmation that the weapon was in fact stolen.

During the course of the investigation, it was learned that the driver’s license was suspended and that there were active warrants for his arrest. Officers also discovered that the truck didn’t have valid insurance, and the registration was likewise suspended. In response, the bouncers brought the man out of the bar and told him that he wasn’t allowed to return for the remainder of the night. While talking with the man, our officer advised him that he was too drunk to be in public, and that he needed to return home and sober up for the evening. The man then left the area, only to return approximately 20 minutes later. After spotting the man attempting to gain entry into another bar, the officer walked over an placed him under arrest for Disorderly Conduct.
