In the early morning hours of Sunday, April 3rd, officers responded to a residence on Tybrisa Street in reference to a noise complaint. Upon their arrival, it was discovered that the noise stemmed from a group of teenagers having a house party at that address. During the course of the investigation, the officers noticed that there was another teenager lying on the ground down the street. As the officers made contact with the teen, he began to empty his pockets onto the ground and put his hands in the air indicating that he didn’t want the officers “to shoot him”. While speaking with the teenager, the officers noticed that his speech was slurred and that there was an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink coming from his breath. The teen was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Disorderly Conduct and Possession/Use of Alcohol by an Underage Person.
Later that same date, officers received a report about a stolen vehicle. According to the victim, he lost his key fob while on Tybee and had left the doors to his vehicle unlocked. When he returned to where the vehicle had been parked in the 17th Street lot, he discovered that it was gone.
On Wednesday, April 6th, officers responded to the beach in reference to an injured person. Upon their arrival, they found a man passed out in the sand with blood on his face. After waking the man, officers attempted to determine when and how the man had become injured, to which he continuously replied, “I’m fine”. During this time, the officers noticed that the man’s eyes had a “glossy” appearance and that he continued to fall asleep. At one point, First Responders arrived on scene and began to assess the man’s medical condition. As they lifted the man to his feet, our officers noticed that he was stumbling from side to side and did not appear to be able to walk without assistance. They also noticed that there was an open container of Vodka nearby. When asked how much he had to drink that day the man replied, “A little bit”. After declining medical treatment, the man was placed under arrest and charged with Public Intoxication.
On Thursday, April 7th, officers were dispatched to a house for sale on Chatham Avenue in reference to a Burglary in progress. As luck would have it, one of our officers was already on patrol in the area and arrived on scene almost immediately. As the officer approached the house, he spotted a man standing inside with a backpack over his shoulder. Upon making contact, the officer instructed the man to step outside and speak with him. As the man complied, he told the officer that he was in the process of buying the house and had already made a down payment. During the course of the conversation, the officer realized that the man matched the description of someone who had recently been caught on surveillance video rattling door knobs and attempting to gain entry into other houses around the island. The officer then made contact with the real estate agent in charge of the house who confirmed that no one had purchased the property or even made an offer on it as of yet. During the course of the investigation, the officer also learned that the man who he found inside of the house had active warrants for his arrest out of a nearby county. The man was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Loitering and Prowling and Burglary. He was then transported to the Chatham County Detention Center to await extradition for his non-local warrants.
On Saturday, April 9th, officers responded to the 1500 block of Butler Avenue in reference to a vehicle striking a pedestrian. During this time, dispatch informed the officers that the pedestrian had “serious injuries” and was being treated by two paramedics who were already on scene. Upon their arrival, our team found that the driver of the vehicle had been detained by two off duty police officers that happened to be in the area at the time of the crash. While speaking with the driver, officers noticed that his speech was slurred and that his eyes had a “glossy” appearance. During the course of the subsequent investigation, officers found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. The driver was subsequently placed arrest and charged with Driving Without a License, Too Fast for Conditions and DUI. The pedestrian was transported by EMS personnel to a local hospital for further treatment.
