• One of our officers was monitoring traffic along Butler Avenue when he checked a vehicle’s speed at 64 mph in the 30 mph speed zone. As the officer turned on his lights and sirens, the vehicle sped up and made a quick turn onto 4th Street, almost striking two pedestrians in the process.

Once on 4th, the vehicle encountered a group of mobile trailers blocking the roadway. After stopping the vehicle, the driver exited and was immediately detained by our officers. A check of the vehicle’s license plate revealed that it bore an improper tag and had no insurance. A subsequent check of the driver’s license revealed that it was suspended, and that she had several active warrants for her arrest, to include one for Armed Robbery. During this same time, officers noticed that the driver had an odor similar to that of an aloholic drink emitting from her body and that there was an open beer bottle in the center console of the vehicle. She was then placed under arrest and charged with Speeding, Reckless Driving, Fleeing and Attempting to Elude, Failure to Yield to Pedestrians in a Crosswalk, Improper Transfer of Plate, No Insurance, Open Container, DUI (Less Safe) and Non-Local Warrants.

Sometime later, the registered owner of the vehicle came to the Tybee Island Police Department and attempted to report it as stolen. During the course of the investigation it was learned that she also had an active warrant and was likewise placed under arrest.

  • One of our officers was on patrol when he found a man sleeping in the roadway on Solomon Avenue. The officer then attempted to wake the man, who “shushed” him in response. After finally convincing the snoozing man that he needed to wake up, the officer noticed that he had an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink emitting from his body and that he was unable to provide coherent responses to questions.

While helping the man to his feet, the officer also noticed that his face was scratched and bloody. Belieing the man to be a danger to himself or others if left to his own devices, the officer placed him under arrest for Disorderly Conduct.

  • One of our officers was on patrol in the area of Highway 80 when he spotted a vehicle failing to maintain its lane. After stopping the vehicle, the officer noticed that the driver’s eyes were red and “glossy”, and that there was an odor similar to that of marijuana emitting from within. During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs. He was then placed under arrest, and charged with Failure to Maintain Lane, No License on Person and DUI (Drugs).

While still on scene, officers learned that the passenger of the vehicle had an active warrant through another jurisdiction. At that time, she was also placed under arrest.

Later that same day, officers responded to a report of kids throwing rocks at a house on Bay Street. While speaking with officers, the complainant showed them a security video which clearly shows juveniles running onto the property and throwing something at the camera. Parents are asked to speak to their children about the legal and physical dangers associated with this kind of activity.

  • One of our officers was on patrol in the area of Butler Avenue, when he checked a vehicle’s speed at 42 mph in the 30 mph speed zone. After stopping the vehicle, the officer immediately smelled an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink emitting from within. During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the woman had been operating the motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. She was then placed under arrest and charged with Speeding and DUI.

  • Officers responded to Tybrisa Street in refence to a possible phone scam. While speaking with our team, the victim stated that she received a call from a subject who identified himself as “Officer Michael Owens” and provided the badge number of “1173”. The victim further stated that “Owens” claimed that he had warrants for her arrest and that she needed to pay $706 in order to keep herself out of jail. In an effort to avoid being arrested, the victim paid.

Please remember that officers of the Tybee Island Police Department will never call and ask you to pay money to take care of warrants or avoid going to jail. If you have questions as to whether or not an officer that spoke with you on the phone is an actual member of TIPD, you can always call our non-emergency number at (912)786-5600 to verify their employment or report suspicious conduct.
