On Sunday, August 14th, officers responded to the area of Fisherman’s Walk in reference to a Hit and Run. During the course of the investigation, officers learned that the victims had been standing at the rear of their pickup in the parking lot, when the truck was struck by another vehicle. After being told that that the police were being called, the other driver reached into his car and grabbed a backpack before running towards the beach. While waiting for officers to arrive, the victims spotted several items with the same name printed on them in the other vehicle, A check of that name through social media confirmed that it belonged to the driver who ran away. While conducting a follow-up investigation, officers were able to make contact with the driver and he was cited accordingly.

On Monday, August 15th, one of our officers was on patrol in the area of Highway 80 and Byers when he spotted a vehicle failing to maintain it’s lane. At that time, the officer flipped on his lights and sirens in an attempt to perform a traffic stop. Instead of pulling over immediately, however, the vehicle continued down Highway 80, leading the officer on a short pursuit at speeds of 35 to 40 miles per hour. After the vehicle finally came to a stop just before the Lazaretto Creek Bridge, the officer noticed that there was a strong odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink coming from within. The officer also noticed that the driver’s words were slurred almost to the point of being incoherent. During the course of the investigation, our officer found additional evidence to suggest that the driver had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Failure to Maintain Lane, Fleeing and Attempting to Elude, Open Container and DUI.

That same day, officers responded to the area of a local motel in reference to a drunk woman rolling around on the ground. While speaking with the woman, they noticed that there was a strong odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink coming from her breath and that her speech was slurred almost to the point of being incoherent. During the course of the conversation, she attempted to stand up several times but was unable to maintain her balance, resulting in her leaning on nearby objects for support. After the woman was medically evaluated by first responders, officers asked the woman if she was staying with anyone that could come collect her from the scene, which she was unable to answer, Officers then asked the woman WHERE she was staying several times, to which she continuously replied, “Over there!”, while pointing in a different direction each time. At that time the woman was placed under arrest and booked into custody for Disorderly Conduct.

On Tuesday, August 16th, one of our officers was on patrol when he paced a vehicle at 45 mph in a 30 mph speed zone. After stopping the vehicle, the officer learned that the driver did not have a license. He was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Speeding and Driving While Unlicensed.

On Thursday, August 18th, officers responded to a house on Lovell Avenue in reference to a possible Burglary. Upon their arrival, the officers met with the residents who stated that had just returned to town and noticed signs that the house had been tampered with. Upon inspection, officers noticed that a key had been broken off in the lock of the front door and that there were windows on the second floor standing open. At that time, officers summoned the Tybee Island Fire Department to the scene. Using one of their ladders, an officer entered the residence through a second story window and noticed that furniture had been broken throughout the house. He also noted that a couch had been moved to form a makeshift barricade against the front door. After searching the house and finding no one inside, officers contacted a detective and asked them to respond to the scene. This remains an active investigation at this time.
