On Wednesday, 08/18/2021, our officers responded to the 15th Street parking lot in reference to a dog inside of a vehicle. Upon arrival, officers found a white in color Pit Bull that appeared to be in distress. A check of the vehicle’s internal temperature came back as approximately 112 degrees. At that time, officers and Tybee Island Fire Department personnel made entry into the vehicle and removed the dog, which was transported to our dispatch center in order to cool off. The owner subsequently came forward and was issued a citation for Animal Confinement.
On Thursday, 08/19/2021, officers were on a call for service when they were flagged down about a man passed out in a bush near the intersection of 15th Street and Butler Avenue. Upon investigation, officers found that the man was highly intoxicated and barely responded to their presence. As officers attempted to communicate with the man it became obvious that he was unable to stand or walk under his own power. He was subsequently lifted to his feet and placed under arrest on the charge of Public Drunkenness.
In the early morning hours of Friday, 08/20/2021, officers responded to a report of a stolen cell phone. While speaking with officers, the victim used a “find my phone” app to determine that the phone was somewhere on the beach near the pier. While checking the area, officers located a man passed out in the sand near 15th Street. Upon closer inspection, they noted that the stolen cell phone was lying by his side. After waking the man, officers issued him a subpoena to appear in court on the charges of Disorderly Conduct, Sleeping in Public and Theft of Mislaid Property. He was then turned over to the custody of a sober family member. The stolen cell phone was returned to it’s rightful owner.
Just after 4:30 AM on Saturday, 08/21/2020, one of our officers was on patrol when he observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed as it went the wrong direction on Tybrisa Street. After stopping the vehicle, the officer noted that the driver had blood shot eyes and a odor similar to that of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his person. During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence that the man had been operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Wrong Way on a One Way Street and Driving Under the Influence.
