On Sunday, August 28th, officers responded to the 1600 block of Butler Avenue in reference to a report of a stolen moped. While speaking with officers, the victim noted that he still had the key to the vehicle in his pocket. The following day, officers responded to the area of Silver Avenue in reference to ANOTHER stolen vehicle, this time a car. While speaking with our team, that victim stated that while leaving for work, he spotted a suspicious couple hiding nearby and noticed that they were accompanied by a small dog and a moped. The man did not call the police because the couple appeared homeless and he did not want to risk getting them into trouble, When he returned from work, his car was gone. When asked, the victim stated that he left the car unlocked with the keys underneath the driver’s seat. While checking the area, officers located the previously stolen moped and noticed that wires had been pulled from the ignition. It was subsequently returned to it’s owner. To date, the car has not been recovered.
On Monday, August 29th, officers responded to the area of the beach at Polk Street in reference to a vehicle stuck in the sand. A detective who was monitoring radio traffic noted that the description of the vehicle and it’s driver matched the description of the man seen setting a fire in the parking lot of Tybee Island Property Rentals the week prior. During the course of the investigation, the man admitted to being the person responsible for the fire and was subsequently charged with Criminal Damage to Property in the 2nd Degree, He also received a city ordinance citation for having a motorized vehicle on the beach.
On Thursday, September 1st, one of our officers was on patrol in the area of Butler Avenue when he checked a vehicle’s speed at 51mph in the 30 mph zone. After stopping the vehicle, the officer learned that the driver did not have a license. He was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Speeding and No Driver’s License.
That same day, one of our officers was on patrol in the area of Butler Avenue when he checked a vehicle’s speed at 60 mph in the 30 mph zone. After stopping the vehicle, the officer noticed that the driver had red, watery eyes, and that there was an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink that became stronger whenever she spoke. During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the driver had been operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. She was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Speeding and DUI (Less Safe).
