In the early morning hours of Sunday, 08/29/2021, one of our officers responded to the parking lot of “Huc-a-poo’s” in reference to a Hit and Run. Upon arrival, the officer spoke with witnesses who said a pickup truck struck a parked motorcycle before leaving the scene. During this time, other officers located the pickup truck near the owner’s registered address and made contact with the driver. While speaking with the driver, officers noted that he had an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink emitting from his person. During the course of the subsequent investigation, officers found additional evidence that the man had been operating the truck while under the influence of alcohol. He was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Duty Upon Striking an Unattended Vehicle and Driving Under the Influence.
Later that same morning, officers responded to “The Rock House” in reference to an intoxicated woman attempting to enter the business. Upon their arrival, officers found the woman screaming at “The Rock House” staff about wanting to “get her things” and visibly crying. Officers then attempted to calm the woman down and make arrangements for her to have a safe ride home. During this time, she attempted to push past the officers several times in an effort to enter the bar. When this was unsuccessful, the woman threw a wad of cash onto an outdoor table in order to “pay her tab”. While speaking with officers, employees of the bar said that the woman had not been inside of “The Rock House” that night, therefore she did not leave any of her belongings inside and did not have a tab to pay. Officers then attempted to place the woman under arrest, at which time she began to actively resist, kicking an officer in the process. Once secured in handcuffs, the woman was transported to the Tybee Island Jail where she was booked into custody on the charges of Public Drunkenness, Disorderly Conduct, Obstruction and Simple Battery on a Peace Officer.
Also on Sunday, 08/29, officers responded to the area of Butler Avenue near the large curve in reference to a single vehicle accident. After their arrival, officers learned that the vehicle involved in the accident had failed to follow the curve, instead continuing straight across the roadway before crashing head-on into a residential building. During the course of the investigation, officers did not find any signs that the driver was under the influence. As such, he was cited for Failure to Maintain Lane and allowed to leave the scene in a taxi. The vehicle sustained major damage during the accident and had to be towed from the scene.
On Monday, 08/30, officers responded to the area of “Doc’s Bar” in reference to a disorderly person on the roof. After their arrival, officers attempted to speak with the man but found that he was unwilling to engage them in conversation. The man then proceeded to yell sporadically while pacing back and forth on the rooftop. As officers continued to speak to the man, he became verbally aggressive, at one point mentioning committing “suicide by cop”. The man then attempted to instigate a fight with officers, yelling at them to “Come on!” and that he’d “Give them a show!”. At that time, officers made the decision to deploy pepperballs in an attempt to get the man to surrender, but this tactic seemed to have no effect. Officers then once again began to speak with the man in an effort to convince him to come down. At one point, the man asked for a bottle of water and a cigarette, and insisted that he would come down from the roof and surrender if provided with those items. The man’s demands were met, and he eventually kept his word and surrendered. He was subsequently placed under arrest on the charges of Disorderly Conduct and Obstruction. During the course of the arrest, officers learned that the man also had a felony warrant out of Florida and he was transported to the Chatham County Detention Center to await extradition.
