On Tuesday, 12/21, officers responded to the area of Highway 80 near Catalina Drive in reference to a motor vehicle crash. While speaking with witnesses, officers learned that the at-fault vehicle had been seen weaving in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed, just before colliding with the rear of the second vehicle. That collision caused the second vehicle to roll over onto it’s side and forced it into the nearby tree line, temporarily trapping the occupants inside. Meanwhile, the at-fault vehicle crossed over the median and came to rest in the opposing lanes of travel.
While speaking with the driver of the at-fault vehicle, officers noticed that she had “glossy” eyes and an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink emitting from her person. During the course of the subsequent investigation, officers found additional evidence to suggest that the woman had been operating her motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. As officers placed her under arrest, the woman attempted to pull away. After being successfully placed in handcuffs, she was transported to the Tybee Island Jail for booking.
While at the jail, the woman grabbed an officer by the arm and hit them. She was subsequently booked into custody on the charges of Too Fast For Conditions, Reckless Driving, Driving Under the Influence and Felony Obstruction. The occupants of the second vehicle did not report any serious injuries as a result of the crash.
On Thursday, 12/23, officers responded to a local restaurant in reference to a report of a man attempting to force his way into the business. Upon arrival, an officer met with the restaurant manager.
While speaking with that officer, the manager stated that the suspect had been locked out of the restaurant after accosting employees on the street. After the staff locked the doors, the man continuously pulled on the handles so aggressively that they broke. At that time, the manager contacted the Tybee Island Police Department.
During the course of that conversation, another officer located the suspect nearby. While speaking with that officer, the suspect stated that he did not mean to break the doors, but that he “didn’t think it was right that the restaurant was closed during business hours”. The man was subsequently placed under arrest and found to be in possession of both a pocket knife and brass knuckles. After booking the suspect at the Tybee Island Police Department, officers prepared to transfer him to the Chatham County Detention Center. During this time, the man pulled the drawstring from a hooded sweatshirt he was wearing and tied it around his neck while announcing his intentions to kill himself. As officers attempted to remove the string from around the man’s neck, he actively resisted their attempts to help him. After successfully cutting the drawstring away, officers transported the man to an area hospital for a mental health evaluation. Once complete, the man was transferred to the Chatham County Detention Center where he was booked into custody on the charges of Criminal Damage to Property in the 2nd Degree and Obstruction.
