On Monday, December 5th, officers responded to the area of McKenzie Street in reference to an ongoing dispute between neighbors. While speaking with officers, the complainant stated that she had spotted her neighbor walking down the street with a BB gun. As she watched, the neighbor pointed the gun towards her house. At that time, officers made contact with the neighbor, who admitted to carrying the BB gun, but claimed that he was doing so to chase cats away from his yard. A report was filed, and the neighbor was issued a Criminal Trespass notice to stay off of the complainant’s property.
On Thursday, December 8th, officers responded back to the area of McKenzie Street in reference to the same ongoing dispute. While speaking with officers, the complainant stated that she had been doing yard work when she heard a “ping” come from a nearby road sign. As she turned around to look, she spotted her neighbor standing near the edge of her property, pointing a BB gun in her general direction. The woman then asked her neighbor if he shot at her, which he denied. He then reportedly threw the gun on the ground and fled the scene. During the course of the follow-up investigation, the man agreed to speak with detectives at the Tybee Island Police Department. At the conclusion of the interview, the man was placed under arrest and charged with Aggravated Assault. He was then transported to the Chatham County Detention Center.
On Friday, December 9th, officers responded to the area of Bay Street in reference to a report of Entering an Auto. While speaking with officers, the complainants stated that someone had rummaged through their vehicles while they parked in their driveway the night before. Upon inspection, the complainants noticed that a set of keys had been stolen from one vehicle and a wallet was taken from another. Both vehicles were unlocked at the time of the theft.
Shortly thereafter, officers responded to a second address on Bay Street in reference to suspicious activity which occurred earlier that same morning. While speaking with our officers, the complainant stated that two people had walked onto his property around 3:30 AM and attempted to open the doors of vehicles parked in his driveway. After realizing the vehicles were locked, the pair immediately left the scene and continued walking down the roadway. This incident was captured on a doorbell camera and the footage was forwarded to our detectives.
That same morning, officers responded to a third address on Bay Street in reference to a report of Entering an Auto. While speaking with our officers, the complainant stated that someone had rummaged through their vehicle while it was parked in their driveway the night before. Upon inspection, the complainant realized that a 2k diamond engagement ring and a wallet had been stolen from within. The complainant was not sure if the vehicle had been locked at the of the theft, however there were no signs of forced entry.
Later still, officers responded to an address on Solomon Avenue in reference to a report of Entering an Auto. While speaking with officers, the complainant stated that they woke up to find the door of one of their vehicles ajar. Upon inspection, the complainant realized that two vehicles had been rummaged through while they were parked in their driveway the night before. It was not immediately clear if any items had actually been stolen. Both vehicles had been unlocked at the time of the incident.
Also on Friday, one of our officers as monitoring traffic along Highway 80 when he spotted a car with an expired registration sticker. After stopping the vehicle, the officer learned that the vehicle did not have insurance and the driver’s license was also suspended. He was subsequently placed under arrest and charged accordingly.
That night, one of our officers was monitoring traffic along Butler Avenue when he spotted a car passing his location without headlights. After stopping the vehicle, the officer learned that it had no insurance, and the registration was suspended. While subsequently speaking with the driver, the officer was able to smell an odor of marijuana emitting from within the vehicle. At that time, both the driver and passenger were asked to step out of the vehicle so that officers could conduct a search. During the course of that search, officers located a small amount of marijuana and a stolen gun, for which the passenger claimed responsibility. He was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Theft by Receiving (Felony). The marijuana was placed into the evidence room at the Tybee Island Police Department and marked for destruction.
On Saturday, December 10th, officers responded to a local bar in reference to a man having exposed his penis in the presence of a customer and the bartender. Upon their arrival, officers were told that the suspect had already left the scene and was last seen wearing a gray hoodie and a ballcap. While checking the area, one of our officers located a man matching that description and instructed the subject to stop walking and speak with him. At that time, the man began to walk away from the officer before finally breaking into a full run. As he ran, the man stripped out of his hoodie and hat and threw them into a nearby trashcan. At one point, officers caught up to the suspect and advised him that if he didn’t stop, he would be tasered. As the man continued to run, an officer fired his Taser, striking the suspect in the back. This momentarily caused the suspect to stop,but appeared to have minimal effect as the suspect stayed on his feet. At that time, another officer tackled the man to the ground and was able to place him under arrest. Once he was in handcuffs, officers requested EMS personnel to respond to the scene. Shortly thereafter, the man began to say that he “couldn’t breathe” and appeared to lose consciousness intermittingly. Upon the arrival of EMS, the suspect was provided with a subpoena to answer for the charges of Public Indecency and Obstruction and then transported to a local hospital for further treatment.
