On Sunday, February 13, one of our officers was on patrol in the area of Highway 80 when he spotted a vehicle that appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed. After checking the vehicle at 51 mph in a 35 mph zone, the officer initiated a traffic stop. During the course of the investigation, the officer learned that the driver’s license was suspended. As such, the driver was placed under arrest and charged accordingly.
On Friday, February 18, officers of the Tybee Island Police Department were participating a Governor’s Office of Highway Safety checkpoint. As one vehicle came through the checkpoint, the driver told officers that he did not have his license with him that evening. Further investigation revealed that the man did not have a driver’s license at all. He was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Driving Without a License.
During the course of that same checkpoint, officers spotted a vehicle making a U-Turn in an effort to avoid the safety check. At that time, Georgia State Patrol Troopers proceeded after the vehicle, with Tybee officers moving to assist. Once the vehicle was stopped, officers discovered several large jars of marijuana along with plastic bags and a digital scale. Officers also discovered that both the driver and the passenger had firearms within reach. Both were subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute (Felony), Possession of Drug Related Objects and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime. The driver was also charged with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol.
On Saturday, February 19, our officers responded to the area of Polk Street in reference to a man lying face down in the roadway. Upon arrival, officers found that the man had been driving a golf cart when he lost control and fell into the roadway. During the course of the investigation, officers also found evidence to suggest that the man was under the influence of alcohol. After being asked to participate in Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, the man began to act in a disorderly manner. At that time he was placed under arrest and charged with Public Drunkenness and Driving While License Suspended.
