On Sunday, January 22nd, one our officers was monitoring traffic along Butler Avene, when he checked a vehicle’s speed at 50 mph in the 30 mph zone. After stopping the vehicle, the officer learned that the driver’s license was suspended. He was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Speeding and Driving While License Suspended.

On Tuesday, January 24th, officers responded to the Tybee Island Post Office in reference to a disorderly subject. While speaking with our officers, postal employees stated that a customer had become upset over fees involving a Post Office Box, and at one point had begun to yell and swear at them. When officers attempted to speak with the man, he initially refused to provide any of his biographical information. After being advised that he could be arrested for not giving the info, the man pulled out his cell phone and began recording officers while claiming that they were “bullying” him. When given the option of leaving the premises or going to jail, the man decided it best to leave. As he drove away, he decided to take one more juvenile jab at our team by extending his middle finger in a gesture commonly referred to as “flipping the bird”. A report was filed and no further action was taken during this time.

On Friday, January 27th, one of our officers was monitoring traffic along Highway 80 when he checked a vehicle’s speed at 47 mph in the 35 mph speed zone. After stopping the vehicle, the officer learned that the driver did not have a license. He was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Speeding and No Driver’s License.

Also on Friday, our team received a report in reference to a possible scam. While speaking with our officers, the complainant stated that he received a telephone call from someone who identified themselves as “Brian from the Chatham County Sheriff’s Department”. According to “Brian”, the complainant had missed court and deputies were being sent to arrest him. When the complainant began to ask questions, “Brian” became nervous and hung up the phone.

On Saturday, January 28th, one of our officers was on patrol in the area of Butler Avenue when he spotted a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. As the officer continued to watch, the vehicle failed to maintain its lane by crossing over a divider line on the roadway. After stopping the vehicle, officers were able to smell an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink emitting from within and noticed an open container lying in plain view ibn the backseat. During the course of the subsequent investigation, officers found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest and charged with Speeding, Failure to Maintain Lane, Open Container and DUI.
