On Monday, July 18th, one of our officers was monitoring traffic along Highway 80 when he used his RADAR device to check a vehicle’s speed at 59 mph in the 35 mph zone. After stopping the vehicle, the officer learned that the driver’s license was suspended. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Speeding and Driving While License Suspended.
On Thursday, July 21st, the Tybee Island Police Department was contacted in reference to a video which had been posted to social media. In the video, a Bonnethead shark is pulled out of the ocean onto the beach. A shirtless white male with dark hair, and a black swimsuit can then be seen shooting the shark with a pistol four times, apparently killing it. The caller insisted that the incident took place on Tybee Island, however officers were not able to locate any identifiable landmarks in the video. While conducting a thorough investigation, detectives consulted with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to discuss applicable charges in relation to the incident. If you have additional pictures, video or pertinent information to share in regards to this case, please contact the Tybee Island Police Department at (912)786-5600.
That same day, officers responded to the area of Memorial Park in reference to a man who reportedly acted in an aggressive manner towards staff members at the YMCA. As officers attempted to speak with the man, he continued to shout over them, making any discussion or further investigation into the incident impossible. At that time, one officer moved to place the man under arrest. As he did so, the man attempted to snatch his arm away, but was quickly grabbed by a second officer. After being placed in handcuffs, the man continued to resist by attempting to pull away from our team before being secured in the rear of a patrol vehicle. He was subsequently charged with Disorderly Conduct and Obstruction.
Later that afternoon, officers responded to a report of a naked guy walking up and down Tybrisa Street. While officers were checking the area, a witness directed them to the yard of a nearby residence. As officers entered the yard, they spotted the suspect and noted that he was, in fact, completely naked. After also spotting our team, the naked man turned and ran, climbing over fences as he crossed through the backyards of nearby houses. Officers then gave chase, engaging in an extended foot pursuit that crossed several properties and streets. At one point, an officer closed the distance between himself and the suspect, warning the naked man that if he didn’t stop he would be tasered. As the man turned to run yet again, the officer made good on his promise, deploying his Taser and effectively ending the pursuit. The man was subsequently charged with Public Indecency, Public Drunkenness and Obstruction.
That evening, officers were dispatched to a local liquor store in reference to a report of two women arguing. As one officer arrived on scene, he saw several staff members push two women out the front door of a nearby bar. During this time, he noticed that one of the women was fighting back against the employees as they removed her from the establishment. Once outside, she walked over to a man standing nearby and punched him in the chest. At that time, the officer announced himself and told the woman that she was being placed under arrest. As he did so, the woman attempted to walk away, prompting the officer to grab her by the arm. As she continued to struggle, the officer guided her to the ground and placed her in handcuffs. During the course of the investigation, officers were told that the incident began when the bartender kicked the woman out of the establishment for harassing another customer. A short time later, the woman returned and attempted to assault the other patron. While being kicked out once again, the woman reached up and grabbed a tiara on the female bartender’s head, pulling her hair in the process. It was at that time that staff members pushed her outside into the view of our officer. She was subsequently charged with Simple Battery. Hours later, officers responded back to the area of the original call in reference to the same woman harassing the staff of the bar as they left work. During the course of the investigation, officers learned that after being released from jail, the woman had hidden near the bar and waited for the employees to leave for the night. As the bartender left, the woman followed her across the street into a nearby parking lot and yelled that she was going to “fuck her up”. A bystander then stepped between the two women, at which time the bartender took the opportunity to dial 911. After hearing the sound of approaching sirens, the suspect fled the scene, but was located a short distance away. She was subsequently placed under arrest again and charged with Disorderly Conduct and Stalking.
