On Monday, 07/26/2021, officers responded to a local motel in reference to a report of a man exposing his genitals to an employee. While speaking with officers, the motel employee stated that the man in question originally attempted to flirt with her, which resulted in her politely turning down his advances. The man then walked away, only to return a few minutes later. At that time, he pulled down his shorts and exposed his penis to the employee before leaving the scene. The employee did not wish to file a report a the time, but asked officers to ensure that the man was truly gone. Officers searched the area but did not locate anyone matching the suspect’s description at the time.

Later that same evening, officers responded to a local bar in reference to a second report of a man exposing his genitals to patrons. While speaking with officers, these victims also declined to pursue the matter, but indicated that the suspect was still inside of the bar. Officers then successfully made contact with the suspect and asked to speak with him outside. During the course of the subsequent conversation, the suspect confirmed that he flirted with the victims but denied exposing himself to anyone. While they were unable to find physical evidence of the indecent exposure at the time, officers did learn that the suspect had active warrants from another jurisdiction. At that time, the suspect was placed under arrest and transported to the Chatham County Detention Center.

On Wednesday, 07/28/2021, officers responded to a residence on 2nd Avenue in reference to an animal attack. Upon their arrival, officers learned that a leashed dog chased and attacked a cat, inflicting severe injuries. The homeowner then took the cat to a veterinarian, where it was euthanized. Neither the dog or it’s owner were on scene at the time officers arrived. Further investigation revealed that the cat had been fed and cared for by a number of families in the area. This remains an active investigation under Animal Control.

On Friday, 07/30/2021, officers responded to the area of Highway 80 near Battery Drive in reference to a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian. During the course of the investigation, officers learned that the side mirror of a vehicle had struck a man jogging down the shoulder of the road. The jogger was transported by EMS personnel to a local hospital in order to receive treatment for his injuries. The driver of the at-fault vehicle was cited for Failure to Use Due Care and released from the scene.

On Saturday, 07/31/2021, officers responded to the area of Butler and 12th Street in reference to a report of a Hit and Run. Upon their arrival, the officers learned that a vehicle struck a pedestrian within the marked crosswalk and fled the scene. A witness was able to provide a description and license plate number, which led to officers locating the vehicle a short distance away. While speaking with suspect, officers noted that he slurred speech and odor similar to that of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his person. During the course of the subsequent investigation, officers found additional evidence that the man had been operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with a Crosswalk Violation, Hit and Run and Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol. The victim declined to be transported to the hospital by EMS personnel and stated they would ride with a friend instead.

Later that same date, officers responded to the area of the beach near the 17th Street crossover in reference to a large fight involving approximately 10 people. During the course of the investigation, officers arrested 2 suspects for Affray based on their roles in the altercation. A third suspect was arrested for Obstruction when he attempted to start ANOTHER fight with witnesses while officers were on scene. A fourth suspect fled the area on foot when officers attempted to detain him. As an officer gave chase, a fifth suspect chased after the officer and placed himself between the officer and the fleeing man, allowing that man to escape. The fifth suspect was then placed under arrest for Obstruction.

Just after 7: 30 PM on Saturday, 07/31/2021, officers responded to the area of the beach near Gulick Street in reference to a bleeding, naked man attempting to fight bystanders. Upon their arrival, officers located a man that matched the description , except that he was now wearing a bathing suit. A witness stated that the man placed a female into a “bear hug” and attempted to lift her into the air when he was stopped by a punch to the face from one of her companions. When asked, the suspect confirmed the information provided by the witness. When asked why he had been naked on the beach, the suspect stated that he had been attempting to “play” with his genitals and indicated that he was under the influence of “Acid” and “Mushrooms”. At that time, officers attempted to escort the man to the nearby parking lot so that he could receive medical treatment from EMS personnel. As they did so, the man attempted to grab nearby bystanders and wipe blood on officers. At the time, officers forced the man to the ground where he was secured with handcuffs and placed under arrest on the charges of Disorderly Conduct, Public Indecency and Obstruction. He was later transported by EMS personnel to an area hospital for medical treatment.
