On Monday, August 1st, officers responded to Tybee Island City Hall after a man was found sleeping inside one of the modular buildings. He was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Loitering and Prowling.
On Tuesday, August 2nd, officers responded to a local business after a man pulled down his pants, exposing his genitals in front of a fan inside the store. Though the suspect left the scene prior to our team’s arrival, they learned that it was the same man who had been arrested at City Hall the day prior. Shortly after taking information for a report and clearing the scene, officers were notified that the man was back at the store. Upon their return, officers placed the man under arrest and charged him with Public Indecency.
On Thursday, August 4th, officers responded to the area of the Lazaretto Creek Bridge in reference to a woman screaming for help. While checking the area, our officers were unable to locate anyone that appeared to be in distress. Soon after, our agency received a second call informing us that the woman had been forced into a vehicle which had then crossed the bridge, heading towards Savannah. Shortly thereafter, officers of the Chatham County Police Department located a vehicle matching the description and performed a traffic stop. Our officers responded to the scene to assist. During the course of the investigation, officers learned that the man and woman inside of the car knew each other and had traveled to Tybee Island together. According to the woman, the man had become abusive during the course of their trip, and at one point began to strangle her while they were inside of the car. The woman further stated that while they were on Highway 80, the man stopped the car and ordered her to get out, so she did. While she was standing in the median, however, the man returned and forced her back into the vehicle against her will. Soon after that, they were stopped by the police. Upon inspection, our officers noticed that the woman had visible physical injuries which were consistent with her account of the events. Due to the fact that the crimes occurred on Tybee Island, our officers subsequently placed the man under arrest and charged him with Aggravated Assault and Kidnapping.
In the morning hours of Friday, August 5th, our team responded to a residence in the area of 17th Street after a small child had been found knocking on the complainant’s door. While checking the area, officers found a vehicle parked in front of a nearby residence that had child safety seats inside. Upon closer inspection, they noticed that the front door of the residence was also slightly open. While speaking with the occupants, officers learned that the child was in fact, theirs, and he was returned to his family safely.
On Saturday, August 6th, officers responded to the large curve, where Highway 80 becomes Butler Avenue, in reference to a motor vehicle crash. Upon their arrival, they learned that a truck had struck three cars and a golf cart. While speaking to the driver of the truck, our team noticed that he was slurring his words and was obviously unsteady on his feet. During the course of the subsequent investigation, the man admitted to being drunk and that he “shouldn’t have been driving”. He was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Failure to Maintain Lane, Reckless Driving and DUI.
