WEEKLY RECAP

(07/04/2021 – 07/10/2021)

On 07/04/2021, our officers responded to the Polk Street Beach Access in reference to a vehicle on the beach. Upon their arrival, our team was met by a Department of Public Works employee who stated he confronted the driver of the vehicle in question. According to the DPW worker, as he attempted to advise the driver that unauthorized vehicles weren’t allowed, the vehicle took off down the beach at a high rate of speed before doing “donuts” in the sand. The vehicle then left the area, but not before the DPW employee was able to take pictures of the vehicle and its license plate number. A check of that plate revealed that the vehicle was registered to a local address. At that time officers responded to the address in question where they found the vehicle still running in the driveway. While attempting to speak with the driver, officers noted that he appeared to be heavily intoxicated. During the course of the subsequent investigation, officers found additional evidence that the man had been operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with No Motorized Vehicles on the Beach, Driving While License Suspended and Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol.

Also on 07/04/2021, one of our officers was monitoring a crosswalk near Butler and 2nd Street. During this time, he observed a vehicle travel through the crosswalk at a high rate of speed, failing to yield the right of way to a couple of pedestrians in the process. After stopping the vehicle in question, the officer learned that the driver’s license was suspended. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Too Fast for Conditions, Failure to Yield to Pedestrians in a Marked Crosswalk and Driving While License Suspended.

On Saturday, 07/10/2021, our team responded to a local restaurant in reference to a disorderly person refusing to leave the premises. Upon their arrival, officers learned that the man had been asked to leave several times for harassing a transgender employee. While speaking with the man, officers asked him to accompany them outside, which he also refused. During the course of their conversation, the officers noted that the man’s speech was slurred and they were able to smell an odor similar to that of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath. As the man continued to refuse to leave the business, officers advised him that he was being placed under arrest. At that time, the man placed both hands on the bar and tensed his arms in an effort to prevent himself from being handcuffed while continuing to insist that he wasn’t leaving. Officers then advised the man that if he continued to resist they would deploy a Taser, at which time he decided to surrender and placed his hands behind his back. The man was placed under arrest and charged with Criminal Trespass.
