• While ion patrol, one of our officers checked the license plate of a single cab truck through the GCIC computer system and learned that it did not have insurance. After stopping the vehicle, the officer learned that the driver’s license was also suspended. In addition, the man had three children as passengers in the truck, which only had a total of three seatbelts. At that time the driver was placed under arrest and charged with No Insurance, Seatbelt Violation and Driving While License Suspended. The three children were given a courtesy ride to the Tybee Island Police Department, where they were turned over to a responsible adult.

  • Just after 1:00 AM, one of our officers was flagged down on 2nd Avenue in reference to an Entering an Auto. While speaking with the officer, the victim stated that his wife caught a man opening the toolbox on the back of the victim’s truck. The woman then yelled at the man, who jumped into a gold in color Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) and fled the scene. The victim further stated that nothing appeared to be missing from his truck, largely due to the fact that he had removed items of value earlier that evening.

  • One of our officers was monitoring traffic along Butler Avenue, when he checked a vehicle’s speed at 47 mph in the 30 mph zone. After stopping the vehicle, the officer learned that the driver had an active warrant for his arrest through another jurisdiction. The man was then placed under arrest and transported to the Chatham County Detention Center to await extradition.

    That afternoon, one of our officers was on patrol in the area of Highway 80 when he checked a vehicle’s speed at 51 mph in the 35 mph zone. The officer also noticed that the vehicle failed to signal while changing lanes. As if that weren’t enough, after stopping the vehicle, the officer learned that the driver did not have a license. She was then placed under arrest and charged with Speeding, Failure to Signal While Changing Lanes and No Driver’s License.

  • Just after 1:00 AM, one of our officers discovered a vehicle abandoned on Highway 80 near Campbell Avenue. Closer inspection revealed that the car appeared to have struck a nearby power pole, resulting in significant damage to the front end and windshield. Information was gathered for a report and the vehicle towed from the scene.

    Later that day, officers responded to a parking lot on Strand Avenue in reference to a child having been accidentally locked inside of a vehicle. With the owner’s permission, one of the officers smashed a window and removed the child unharmed.

    Shortly thereafter, one of our officers was on patrol in the area of Highway 80 when he spotted a vehicle weaving in and out of heavy traffic. As the officer watched, the vehicle continued to weave recklessly in between lanes, cutting some cars off and tailgating others in front of it. When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, it increased its speed and continued to weave between cars in an apparent attempt to escape. As the suspect vehicle approached the Lazaretto Creek Bridge, it encountered bumper-to-bumper traffic, leaving the driver no other option but to pull over. The teenaged driver was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Too Fast for Conditions, Failure to Signal While Changing Lanes, Passing on the Right, Following Too Closely, Reckless Driving, Possession of Alcohol by a Minor and Fleeing and Attempting to Elude.

  • One of our officers was on patrol in the area of Highway 80 when he checked a vehicle’s speed at 55mph in the 35 mph zone. After stopping the vehicle, the officer was able to smell an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink emitting from within, and spotted open containers of alcohol behind the driver’s seat. During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest the woman had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. She was then placed under arrest and charged with Speeding, Open Container and DUI.

    Later that same day, officers responded to the area of Highway 80, in reference to a report of a vehicle in the marsh. During the course of the investigation, the officer learned that the vehicle had been traveling westbound on Highway 80, when the driver attempted to retrieve their cellphone from a bookbag behind the seat. At that time the vehicle crossed the median, and both lanes of oncoming traffic, before slamming into the marsh. The crash resulted in the airbags being deployed and disabling damage to the vehicle’s front end. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Too Fast for Conditions, Failure to Maintain Lane, Hands Free Violation and Reckless Driving.

  • One of our officers was on patrol in the area of Highway 80 when he spotted a vehicle failing to maintain its lane. After stopping the vehicle, the officer was able to smell an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink emitting from within. During the course of the subsequent investigation, officers found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest and charged with Failure to Maintain Lane and DUI.
