A concerned citizen gave one of our officers a wallet he found near 17th. Upon closer inspection, the officer found that the wallet contained a student identification card. After contacting the listed university, the officer was able to get in touch with the owner and made arrangements for them to retrieve their property. A report was filed, and no further action was taken at that time.

Officers responded to an address on McKenzie Avenue in reference to a possible theft. While speaking with our team, the victim stated that he had ridden his bicycle to work at a local surf shop the previous evening. At the end of the night, he accepted a ride home from a coworker, leaving his bicycle outside of the store. Unfortunately, when he returned the next day, the bike was gone. A report was filed, and the victim was given information for follow-up purposes.

During Tybee Island Municipal Court, officers learned that one of the attendees had an active warrant through another jurisdiction. He was then placed under arrest and transported to the Chatham County Detention Center to await extradition.

One of our officers stopped a vehicle for failing to maintain its lane. While talking with the driver, the officer noticed that his eyes were red, he slurred his words as he spoke, and there was an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink coming from his breath. When asked how much he had to drink that evening, the man replied, “two beers”. During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest and charged with Failure to Maintain Lane, Obscured/Missing License Plate, and DUI (Less Safe).

Officers responded to the Tybee Island Maritime Academy in reference to a burglar alarm. After finding no one on the property, officers cleared the scene. A report was filed, and no further action was taken at that time.

Officers were participating in a Road Safety Checkpoint, when a vehicle came through with its high beams activated. While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that his eyes were bloodshot, and the lids were “drooping”. When asked for his license, the driver provided one from another country. In addition, the vehicle appeared to have a forged temporary tag, and the driver was unable to provide proof of registration or insurance. After placing the man under arrest, officers conducted an inventory of his vehicle. After placing the man under arrest, officers performed an inventory of his vehicle. During that time, they discovered a small amount of marijuana. The man was then charged with Failure to Dim Headlights, No Driver’s License, No Registration, No Insurance, and DUI (Drugs - Less Safe).

At approximately 6:00AM, one of our officers was flagged down by a concerned citizen about a man sleeping on the street. Further investigation revealed that the man was lying in a sleeping bag in front of a local bar. After waking the man, the officer informed him that there was a city ordinance against sleeping in public, which the man acknowledged with a “thumbs up”. A short time later, the officer found the man sleeping on a bench just down the street. He was then placed under arrest and charged with Disorderly Conduct.

Officers received a report of a stolen firearm. While speaking with our team, the caller stated that he had placed a firearm in the center console of his vehicle before coming to work on the island that morning. When he returned home that afternoon, the gun was missing. A report was filed, and the caller was provided with information for follow-up purposes.

Just before 8:00PM, one of our officers spotted a vehicle driving down Butler Avenue without headlights. After stopping the car, the officer noticed that the driver’s eyes were bloodshot and “watery”. There was also an odor of marijuana wafting through his open window. When asked, the man admitted to smoking “one blunt on the beach” before driving. The officer also noticed that his cellphone was lying in his lap in violation of Georgia law. During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of drugs. He was then placed under arrest, and charged with Headlight Requirements, Hands Free Violation, and DUI (Drugs).

One of our officers stopped a golf cart for driving down the shoulder of the divided highway. While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that his eyers were red, and that there was an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink coming from his breath as he spoke. The officer also spotted an open container of alcohol in the front cupholder of the cart. When asked, the man originally denied having any alcohol, before changing his answer to “one drink”. During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the cart while under the influence. He was then placed under arrest, and charged with Golf Cart Violations, Driving within the Gore/Median, Open Container, and DUI (Less Safe).

One of our officers stopped a “Low Speed Vehicle” for not having an amber light or safety placard. While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that his eyes were bloodshot and that his face had a “flushed” appearance. The man also slurred his words as he spoke. When asked if he would participate in Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, the man refused, claiming that the officer had initiated an “unlawful stop”. He was then placed under arrest and charged with Operating a Low-Speed Vehicle on the Highway, and DUI (Less Safe).

One of our officers stopped a golf cart for driving on Highway 80, a violation of Tybee Island City Ordinance. As the officer approached, the driver stated, “Dude, you got me.” When asked what he meant, the man replied that he “must have been doing something illegal”. During the course of their conversation, the officer noticed that the man’s eyes were red and that he slurred his words as he spoke. There was also an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink that seemed to be coming from his breath. When asked how much alcohol he had that evening, the man replied, “A lot”, and explained that he “doesn’t count his beers”. During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the cart while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest and charged with Golf Cart Violations and DUI (Less Safe).
