On Monday, March 21st, our team received a report of an online scam. While speaking with one of our officers, the victim stated that he found an ad for a rental property on Craiglist. After emailing back and forth with the person who posted the ad, the victim provided a “down payment” of $1,200 via CashApp. The two then made an agreement that the person who posted the ad would call the victim at a later time for the full payment and provide instructions on where to pick up the key for the property. When the victim was halfway to Tybee, he still had not received a call. At that time, he tried to email and call the original poster back but did not receive an answer. Further research showed that the ad had been removed from Craigslist. The victim then contacted CashApp, who advised him to file a police report but was unable to offer any further assistance at that time.
On Tuesday, March 22nd, one of our officers was monitoring traffic on Butler Avenue when he spotted a vehicle traveling at 50 mph in the 30 mph zone. After stopping the vehicle, the officer learned that the driver’s license was suspended. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Speeding and Driving While License Suspended.
That same date, another officer was monitoring traffic on Highway 80 when he spotted a vehicle traveling at 57 mph in the 35 mph zone. After stopping the vehicle, the officer learned that the driver’s license was suspended. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Speeding and Driving While Unlicensed.
On Thursday, March 24th, our team received another report of an online scam. While speaking with officers, the complainant stated that she was looking at renting a property on Tybee Island through a company called “Holiday Rents By Owner”. While speaking with the person who posted the ad, the complainant was instructed to make an account on a website called “Wise.com” to send a payment. The complainant located a subject on Facebook with the same name, who informed her that the person who posted the ad was using his name without permission and that the ad was a scam. A report was filed and the case was forwarded to investigations.
On Saturday, March 26th, officers responded to a local condominium complex in reference to license plates having been stolen off of two vehicles. Both license plates were subsequently entered into the Georgia Crime Information Center network as stolen.
Later that same date, officers responded to a local apartment building in reference to a Burglary. While speaking with officers, the victim stated that someone kicked in the door to his apartment while he was away and had stolen several pieces of jewelry and sunglasses. During the course of the investigation, officers learned that the property manager had surveillance video of the suspect kicking in the door of the victim’s apartment. While viewing the video, the victim positively identified the suspect as an acquaintance of his. Officers then responded to the suspect’s address and found him standing in the yard, wearing the same clothes he had been seen wearing while committing the crime on surveillance video. When confronted about the crime, the suspect confessed and told officers where they could locate the stolen property. All of the stolen items were subsequently collected and returned to it’s rightful owner. The suspect was placed under arrest and charged with Burglary.
