• One of our officers stopped a vehicle for traveling 45 mph in a 30-mph zone.

    While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that her eyes were bloodshot and that she slurred her words as she spoke. There was also an odor similar that of an alcoholic beverage wafting through her open window. When asked if she was willing to participate in Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, she initially replied, “Yes”. As the officer attempted to administer the tests, however, she proved either unwilling or unable to follow simple instructions. She was then placed under arrest and charged with Speeding, Failure to Maintain Lane, Open Container, Driving While License Suspended, and DUI (Less Safe).

  • Officers received a report in reference to a stolen surfboard. While speaking with our team, the caller stated that she had dropped her daughter off at the beach with her surfboard. When she returned sometime later, she found her daughter asleep, and the board gone.

    The board is described as being a “Rocket Brand Baby Jesus” Kids’ surfboard with a blue top and black and white graphic on the bottom.

    Officers responded to the area of the beach near the 14 ½ Street crossover in reference to a disorderly female. According to the caller, the woman had been seen screaming and throwing sand at a baby.

    Upon our team’s arrival on scene, witnesses flagged them down and pointed out the suspect. As the officers approached and introduced themselves to the woman, she began to raise her voice and cuss at them in response. When asked to provide her identification, she refused. During the course of this exchange, an officer noticed a small liquor bottle in the woman’s fanny pack. When asked if the bottle was made of glass, the woman pulled it from the fanny pack and began slamming it into the railing of the beach crossover. She was then placed under arrest and charged with Obstruction.

    While being transported to the Chatham County Detention Center, the woman spontaneously claimed responsibility for a stabbing which occurred in another city. She was then booked into custody, and officers from the jurisdiction in question were notified about the new development in their case.

    One of our officers stopped a vehicle for failing to maintain its lane and speeding.

    While talking to the driver, the officer noticed an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink that became stronger as she spoke. He also noticed that there were three young children in the vehicle as well. When asked how much alcohol she had that evening, the woman admitted to having “a single margarita” several hours earlier. During the course of the subsequent investigation, however, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the woman had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. She was then placed under arrest, and charge with Speeding, Failure to Maintain Lane, DUI (Less Safe), and Endangering a Child While DUI.

    Another officer sat at the police department with the chldren until the woman was eventually released.

  • One of our officers responded to the area of Tybrisa Street in reference to damage to property. While speaking with the officer, Parking Serivces personnel pointed out that the solar panel housing unit on a parking meter had been damaged. A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

    Officers responded to the area of Solomon Avenue in reference to a theft.

    While speaking with our team, the caller stated that an unknown man had ridden a bicycle onto her property, before leaving it lying in the bushes. He then took HER bicycle, along with a JBL speaker, and rode away. During the course of their conversation, the caller provided officers with photos and video footage of the incident.

    A report was filed, and the case remains under investigation.

  • Officers responded to an address on Miller Avenue in reference to a suspicious incident.

    While speaking with our team, the caller stated that her father had been on home hospice care up until his passing approximately 8 months ago. She further stated that following his death, she had given some of the leftover medical equipment away.

    Just after 8:00PM on the night in question, the caller’s dog began barking, alerting her to the fact that someone was on her front porch. When she opened the door, she was greeted by a man who stated that he was there to pick up various medical equipment. The caller found this strange due to the late hour, and the fact that she had already given some of the equipment he mentioned away. When asked for his name, the man became angry and refused to identify himself. He then demanded to be let into the house to retrieve the equipment. The caller then explained that she was uncomfortable with that idea and asked the man if he would be willing to reschedule to a later date. He then threatened to call the police, before storming back to his vehicle and driving away.

    A report was filed, and no further action was taken at that time.

  • Officers responded to a vacation rental on Strand Avenue in reference to damage to property. While speaking with our team, a maintenance technician stated that it appeared someone had attempted to kick in the back door. Upon inspection, the officer noticed that the molding around the door had been broken off the wall as if someone had attempted to force entry.

    A report was filed, and the technician was provided with information for follow-up.

    While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that his eyes were bloodshot and that he slurred his words as he spoke. There was also an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink wafting through his open window. When asked, the man admitted to having several “Jack and Cokes”, several hours prior. During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest, and charged with Speeding, Failure to Maintain Lane, and DUI (.08 grams or more).

  • Officers responded to Memorial Park in reference to a report of juveniles smoking marijuana in the bathroom. Upon their arrival on scene, officers made contact with the group of juveniles and were able to smell the odor of marijuana lingering throughout the room. A K9 was deployed, leading to the discovery of additional marijuana, which the group had attempted to hide. Officers then stood by on scene while the juveniles cleaned up a mess they had made, before being released to go home. The marijuana was transported to the Tybee Island Police Department where it was marked for destruction and placed into our evidence room.

    Officers responded to a local condominium complex in reference to a stolen golf cart. While speaking with our team, the caller stated that the cart had gone missing sometime between 10 and 11 AM that morning.

    Later that day, the victim called back to inform us that the cart had come home. She further stated that she believes someone may have taken it by mistake, believing it to be their rental. A report was filed, and no further action was taken at that time.

    Officers responded to a local dog park in reference to someone strangling an animal with a leash.

    While speaking with our team, the caller stated that they watched a man hoist a dog over a nearby fence and proceed to strangle it by holding it off the ground by its leash. The caller further stated that this went on for approximately 7 seconds, while the dog yelped and gasped for air. When confronted by the caller, the man allegedly broke two fence slats and pulled the dog through the hole he created. He and his companion then rounded up their 4 other dogs, loaded them into their van, and left the scene.

    During the course of their conversation, the caller was able to provide officers with photos and video of the incident. A report was filed, and the case remains under investigation.

  • Officers responded to the area of the 7th Street crossover in reference to a golf cart stuck on the beach. While conducting an inventory of the abandoned vehicle, officers found a debit card which was placed into evidence. They then stood by on scene while the cart was towed by the Department of Public Works. A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

    Officers responded to a local nursing home in reference to a fight between patients. While speaking with officers, the victim stated that the suspect had punched her, before pulling a “nurse call” button out of the wall and beating her with it, for no reason other than “she was evil”.

    An officer then responded to the suspect’s room, where he found her lying in bed. During the course of their conversation, the officer found the suspect difficult to understand, and she indicated for him to move closer. As he did so, the woman squeezed his hand tightly and tried to pull him closer to her. When he jerked away, she grabbed a rolling table and rammed it into his thighs. Afte removing the table from the room, the officer turned the suspect over to the nursing staff, who indicated that she would be sedated and transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. A report was filed, and the victim was provided with information for follow-up.
