• Officers responded to the Tybee Island Police Department in reference to taking a report. While speaking with our team, the complainant stated that on the day prior, his son was walking down the street with two girls, when the group was approached from behind by a man on a “fat tire” style bicycle. The man then allegedly told the complainant’s son, “Stay the f—- away from my wife and daughter or I’ll get my gun”. The young man then reportedly ran from the scene at the mention of a gun. A report was filed, and the case was forwarded to investigations.

  • Just after 1:00 in the morning, one of our officers spotted a vehicle traveling down Butler Avenue with a defective headlight. After stopping the vehicle, the officer was able to smell a strong odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink emitting from within. He also noticed that the driver’s eyes had a “glazed” appearance and that she seemed to be extremely confused as to why she was pulled. During the course of the stop, the officer also learned that the driver’s license was suspended, the vehicle’s registration was expired, and it had no active insurance coverage. When asked if she was willng to participate in Standardized Field Sobriety testing, the driver refused. She was then placed under arrest and charged with Headlight Requirements, Expired Registration, No Insurance and DUI (Less Safe).

  • While on foot patrol in Memorial Park, one of our officers spotted a woman whom he knew to have a warrant for her arrest. As he approached the woman, she began to direct a string of profanity in his direction while also stepping towards him in an aggressive manner. The officer then drew his Taser, at which time she turned and began to walk away, ignoring multiple commands to “stop”. At that time, the officer holstered his Taser and took hold of the woman, placing her under arrest. She was then transported to the Chatham County Detention Center to answer for warrant.

  • One of our officers stopped a vehicle for having a cardboard sign with the handwritten words “Tag Applied For” instead of an actual license plate. While speaking with the driver, the officer learned that the vehicle had no registration or insurance. He also learned that the driver’s license was suspended and that there was an active warrant for her arrest. During the course of the stop, officers also discovered that there was a baby in the backseat who was not properly restrained. The driver was then placed under arrest on the charges of No Registration, No Insurance, Driving While License Suspended, Child Safety Seat Violation and Non-Local Warrant. The baby was safely turned over to the custody of a family member.

  • One of our officers initiated a traffic stop on a pickup truck for traveling the wrong way on a one-way street. During this time, the officer noticed that there were two men wearing masks in the bed of the pickup. As the vehicle came to a stop, one of the men hopped out of the bed and began to walk away. After being ordered to stop, the man broke into a run and fled the scene.

While checking the area, another officer spotted a man walking down Jones Avenue, who suddenly took off running. Believing him to be the suspect who fled from the traffic stop, the officer pursued the man to the area of Fisherman’s Walk, where he attempted to hide behind a parked car. As the officer exited his patrol vehicle, the man ran into a nearby yard, where he became trapped between the officer and a fence. After placing the suspect under arrest, the officer learned that he was NOT the man who fled from the traffic stop. What he was, however, was an obviously intoxicated juvenile. The officer then transported the juvenile to the Tybee Island Police Department, where he was charged with Possession of Alcohol by a Minor and Obstruction, before being released into the custody of his grandmother,

  • While on patrol in the area off Butler and Tybrisa, one of our officers witnessed a fight break out between two men nearby. As the officer moved to intervene, both men were on the ground, with one actively punching the other. After ordering the man to stop several times, and receiving no response, the officer deployed his Taser in “drive stun” mode, striking the suspect in the lower back. While the Taser seemed to have little effect, the officer was able to pull the man off of the other combatant. Both men were subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Affray.

  • Just before 4:00 AM, one of our officers was on patrol, when he spotted an obviously intoxicated individual attempting to open the doors of closed businesses. The man then sat down in a chair outside of a local bar. As the officer walked over to ask if the man was ok, he noticed that the man had passed out. After waking the man, the officer attempted to determine where he was staying for the evening, to which the man simply mumbled, “home”. He was then placed under arrest and charged with Disorderly Conduct.
