On Sunday, 5/1, officers responded to a local restaurant in reference to a fight. Upon arrival, they noticed that the tables and chairs intended for use as outdoor seating had been flipped and were lying on the ground. While speaking with witnesses, officers were told that three unknown men had randomly attacked and beaten a male victim before fleeing the scene. First Responder personnel were called to the scene to clean and treat the victim’s injuries. A report was filed and the case was forwarded to investigations.
On Monday, 5/2, one of our officers was on patrol when he spotted a chicken running in and out of the roadway. The officer was able to locate the animal’s coop at a nearby residence and proceeded to escort it back home safely. The chicken’s owners were not home at the time.
On Tuesday, 5/3, one of our officers was monitoring traffic along Highway 80, when he received a notification from a License Plate Reader in regards to a vehicle which had just come onto the island with an expired tag. After spotting the vehicle, the officer initiated a traffic stop as it turned into the parking lot of a local business. During the course of the stop, the officer learned that the driver’s license was suspended and she also had an active warrant through Gwinnett County. At that time, the driver was placed under arrest and charged with Expired Registration and Driving While License Suspended. She was then taken to the Chatham County Detention Center to await transport to Gwinnett County to answer for her warrant.
On Wednesday, 5/4, one of our officers was on patrol when he spotted a vehicle running a stop sign at the intersection of 17th Street and Butler Avenue. After stopping the vehicle, the officer learned that the driver did not have a license. He was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Driving While Unlicensed.
On Thursday, 5/5, an officer was on patrol when she spotted a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. After stopping the vehicle, the officer noticed that the driver was sweating heavily and that his speech was slurred. When asked, the driver admitted to having an alcoholic drink, but claimed that it had been approximately two hours before. During the course of the investigation, the officer found additional evidence that the driver had been operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Speeding and DUI.
Also on Thursday, our team received a report in reference to a phone scam. According to the complainant, she received a call from a subject claiming to be an officer with the Tybee Island Police Department. This fake “officer” then proceeded to tell the complainant that she owed $8,000 in contempt of court fees that needed to be paid, or she would be placed under arrest. The complainant then contacted the Clerk of Tybee Island’s Municipal Court and learned that she didn’t owe any money and that the call had been a scam. A report was filed and forwarded to investigations.
That same date, a woman called to report her brother, Corey Joseph White, as missing. According to the caller, Corey had not been showing up for work on a local shrimp boat and none of his friends had seen or heard from him for several days. The Tybee Island Police Department then issued a “Be on the Lookout” to all officers and reached out to social media for assistance. Our detectives continue to actively investigate Corey’s disappearance and would appreciate any help you can provide. A Missing Person’s poster appears at the end of today’s recap. Just before 4AM on Saturday, 5/7, one of our officers was on patrol when he spotted a U-Haul truck failing to maintain it’s lane by crossing over the divider lines on the roadway. After stopping the truck, the officer learned that the driver’s license was suspended. She was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Failure to Maintain Lane and Driving While License Suspended.
Later that same day, officers responded to a rental property after maintenance personnel found a group of teenagers smoking marijuana in a unit that was supposed to be vacant. During the course of the investigation, the property manager learned that two of the teenagers were part of a family staying in another unit, and that they had let themselves into the vacant unit to do drugs with their friends. As a result, the family was evicted from the property. Officers stood by on scene to ensure everyone’s safety as the family packed their belongings and left the area. A report was filed and no further action was taken at that time.
Later still, officers responded to the area of Polk and Fort in reference to a Hit-and-Run. During the course of the investigation, officers learned that a silver Toyota Sedan had rear-ended a City Department of Public Works vehicle. When the DPW employee told the at-fault driver that he was contacting the police, the driver fled the scene. Officers checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle at the time.
