• One of our officers stopped a vehicle for failing to maintain its lane.

    While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that his eyes were red and that he slurred his words as he spoke. There was also a smell similar to that of an alcoholic drink on his breath. When asked, the man admitted to having “a couple of drinks” approximately 30 minutes prior to the stop.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest and charged with Failure to Maintain Lane and DUI.

    One of our officers stopped a vehicle for traveling in the wrong direction on Tybrisa, a one-way street.

    While talking to the 18-year-old driver, the officer noticed that his eyes were red and that he slurred his words when he spoke. There was also an open container of alcohol lying within plain view in the backseat. When asked, the teen admitted to having “a couple of coronas” earlier in the evening.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the teen had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. During a search incident to arrest, the officer also found a fake identification card, and a nicotine vape. The teen was then charged with Wrong Way on a One Way, Open Container, Forgery 1st Degree, Possession of Tobacco by a Minor, and DUI (Less Safe).

    One of our officers stopped a vehicle for traveling 46mph in a 30mph zone.

    While talking to the driver, the officer noticed that his eyes were watery, and the lids were drooping. When asked, the man admitted to having “one shot” sometime earlier.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. In addition, a check of the man’s driver’s license revealed that it was suspended, and he had an active warrant through another jurisdiction. He was then placed under arrest on the charges of Speeding, Driving While License Suspended, and DUI, before being transferred to the Chatham County Detention Center to answer for his non-local warrant.

    Officers received information that a wanted subject was on the island. While checking the area, an officer spotted the suspect’s vehicle in the area of North Beach. As he attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the suspect vehicle fled the area at a high rate of speed drifting around corners and running stop signs as it went. In an effort to avoid placing the public in unnecessary danger, our officers made the decision not to pursue.

    A short time later, dispatch began receiving reports of a vehicle matching the suspect’s description driving recklessly around the island. Several callers reported that the suspect had almost struck people in or near the roadway. At that time, officers began to canvass the area.

    After locating the suspect, officers once again attempted to initiate a traffic stop. Once again, the suspect began to flee. During this time, one officer utilized his in-car radar to check the suspect’s speed at a whopping 103mph. In an effort to avoid placing the public in further unnecessary danger, our team once again made the decision not to pursue.

    A short time later, the suspect vehicle was traveling southbound on Butler Avenue, when it crashed into a tree line near 19th Street. The suspect then attempted to flee on foot down Chatham Avenue but was quickly apprehended. He was subsequently charged with Speeding, Laying Drag, Failure to Maintain Lane, Failure to Obey Traffic Control Device, Reckless Driving, Fleeing and Attempting to Elude Law Enforcement Officers, Open Container, and DUI (Less Safe).

  • Officers responded to the area of 8th Street, beachside, in reference to an improperly parked vehicle blocking the driveway of a nearby house.

    After making an unsuccessful attempt to locate the owner, the officer arranged for the vehicle to be towed.

    A report was filed, and no further action was taken during that time.

  • One of our officers stopped a vehicle for failing to stop at a stop sign.

    While talking to the driver, the officer learned that his license was suspended. He was then placed under arrest and charged accordingly.

  • One of our officers stopped a vehicle for failing to maintain its lane.

    While talking to the teenaged driver, the officer noticed that his eyes were red and that he slurred his words as he spoke. There was also a smell similar to that of an alcoholic drink on his breath. When asked, the teen admitted to taking “a double shot”, before adding that he “had a few good sips of Modelo”. Then, after deciding that he wanted to be “a little more honest”, he finally admitted to taking “a little sip of Twisted Tea”.

    During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the teen had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest, and charged with Failure to Maintain Lane, and DUI (Under 21).

    While on patrol, one of our officers found a violin lying on the side of Highway 80. He then collected the instrument and placed it into our evidence room for safekeeping.

    Officers responded to a local bar in reference to a large fight, reportedly involving approximately 30 people.

    Upon their arrival, officers noticed a large number of people all walking away from the scene in different directions. While speaking with witnesses, however, they were able to determine that the altercation involved employees of the bar, and a group of visitors from out of state.

    While speaking with our team, the group of visitors stated that they had been inside of the bar, when one of their members was found to be underage. They further stated that after escorting their friend from the establishment, the owner had continued to yell and escalate the situation, before finally punching a member of their group in the face. At that point, an all-out altercation ensued.

    While speaking with the employees, however, officers were told that it was actually a member of the visiting group that had escalated the situation, after he physically attacked two of the employees unprovoked.

    A review of camera footage revealed evidence that corroborated the story told by the bar’s employees. As a result, one of the members of the other group was placed under arrest and charged with two counts of Battery.

    During the course of the investigation, officers learned that one of the witnesses had an active warrant through another jurisdiction. He was also placed under arrest and transferred to the Chatham County Detention Center to answer for his non-local warrant.

  • Officers responded to a report of lost property. While speaking with our team, the victim stated that she had taken off several pieces of jewelry and placed them in her cooler while at the beach. When she got home later that day, she realized the items were missing. She believes that either someone stole the items, or that they were accidentally dumped out when her boyfriend poured water from the cooler onto the ground.

    One of our officers was approached by a man who claimed to have found a bag of white powder while cleaning out his taxi. The officer then took custody of the item and placed it into our evidence room marked to be destroyed.

    Officers responded to the 16th Street parking lot in reference to a disorderly person.

    While speaking with our team, a woman reported that she had been standing in an otherwise empty parking spot, when a man hit her with his vehicle. He then left the scene.

    While checking the area, officers were able to locate the other party. During the course of their conversation, the man denied striking the woman, and stated that she simply placed her hands on the hood of his vehicle while he was slowly pulling into the parking space.

    Our team located a camera nearby but were unable to make contact with the owner. As a result, a report was filed, and the case was forwarded to investigations.

  • Officers responded to the City of Tybee’s “South Annex” for a report of a Hit and Run.

    While speaking with our team, city employees stated that a man had backed his vehicle into a Parking Services truck and left the scene.

    A report was filed, and the case remains under investigation.
