  • Officers of the Tybee Island Police Department responded to a local condominium complex in reference to a possible theft. During the course of the investigation, separate victims came forward to report that a bicycle and two surfboards had been stolen from the common garage sometime during the night prior. While canvassing the area, our team was able to locate surveillance cameras that they believed may have caught images of the suspects. After obtaining the footage, officers observed three males riding bicycles around the garage while carrying the stolen boards.

Several hours later, we received a tip from the community after the same three suspects were spotted lurking around a local motel. Once on scene, officers found the stolen bike, along with two others, stashed behind the building. After reviewing the motel’s cameras, it was confirmed that the bikes had been recently placed there by the same suspects from the earlier call.

Shortly thereafter, one of our officers spotted the trio on 3rd Street and confronted them. During the course of their conversation, the two stolen surfboards were discovered in the bed of their pickup truck. All three suspects were then placed under arrest.

We are proud of the hard work, and dedication of our officers and dispatchers in reuniting these stolen items with their rightful owners. We’d also like to thank our community for all of their assistance in ensuring those responsible for the thefts are held accountable for their actions.

  • Officers responded to the area of the Post Office in reference to a possible assault.

While speaking with our team, the caller stated that while leaving a local bar, he spotted a group of people getting into the back seat of a taxi. At that time, he jumped into the front passenger seat and asked to tag along to another bar. The caller further stated that during the course of the ride, the group of people in the back began to insult him by insisting that he wasn’t “a real Tybee Island local”. In response, he called one of the women a “carpetbagger”, and told the entire group, “You ain’t Tybee”. This allegedly angered the back seat batch, resulting in one of them pulling the caller’s hair.

Officers then spoke with the other passengers of the taxi, who insisted that the caller had been aggressive towards them the entire ride, and that no one touched his hair.

A report was filed, and the two parties were sent their separate ways.
