On Sunday, October 30th, a member of the Department of Public Works (DPW) came to the Tybee Island Police Department with a purse that was found inside of a trash can at Memorial Park. While inventorying the purse’s contents, one of our officers located a checkbook with a phone number inside. After making contact with the rightful owner, the officer learned that the purse had been left inside of a vehicle overnight. When the owner woke up the following morning, she noticed that the vehicle appeared to have been ransacked, with several compartments left open. After having her purse returned to her, the owner stated that the only thing that appeared to be missing was her wallet, which contained her identification, credit cards and $100 cash. This remains an active investigation at this time.

On Monday, October 31st, officers responded to the area of 15th Street in reference to a fight. During the course of the investigation, officers learned that the suspect had followed the victim and his friends out of a local bar, harassing them along the way. After being asked to leave the group alone and go home, the suspect reportedly hit the victim several times, knocking him to the ground and causing a gash on his forehead. The suspect was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Battery.

Later that same day, officers responded to the 1500 block of Butler Avenue in reference to a woman reportedly being thrown to the ground. While speaking with officers, the victim stated that she had taken back a cellphone that she previously purchased for her now ex-boyfriend. Afterwards, the man’s current girlfriend approached her, yelling about the phone before grabbing the victim’s hair and throwing her to the ground. Officers also spoke to the current girlfriend, who denied touching the victim and further claimed that she was the one who had actually been harassed by the other woman throughout the course of the night. After being unable to locate any impartial witnesses, officers took the information for a report and provided the victim with a courtesy ride back to her house.

Shortly thereafter, officers were called back to the victim’s residence after the ex-boyfriend showed up, demanding his phone back. During the course of the investigation, our team learned that the ex-boyfriend had a felony warrant from another jurisdiction. He was subsequently placed under arrest and transferred to the Chatham County Detention Center.

On Wednesday, November 2nd, one of our officers was monitoring traffic along Highway 80 when he spotted a car with a headlight out. After conducting a traffic stop, the officer learned that the driver’s license was suspended. He was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Defective Equipment and Driving While License Suspended.

On Friday, November 4th, one of our officers was monitoring traffic along Highway 80, when he watched a pickup truck pull out of Battery Row and turn the wrong way on the divided Highway. After realizing his mistake, the driver turned around and began traveling in the appropriate direction. After conducting a traffic stop, the officer found 3 teenagers sitting in the bed of the truck, and 9 others crammed into the cab. During the course of the investigation, the officer began to smell the distinct odor of marijuana emitting from the group. When confronted about the odor, one of the teenagers handed the officer a glass pipe, a small amount of marijuana and a lighter. The driver was then cited accordingly, and all of the teenagers were released to their respective parents.
