On Sunday, 10/31/2021, officers responded to the Savannah Beach Nursing Home in reference to a fight. While speaking with officers, the complainant indicated that the fight occurred after someone stole some of his personal items, to include mail and snacks. During the course of the investigation officers learned that the complainant allegedly slapped another resident over the theft, but there did not appear to be any injuries. A report was filed and the residents were left in the care of nursing home staff.
Also on Sunday, one of our officers was conducting extra patrol at the Tybee Island Maritime Academy when he was flagged down in reference to a possible theft. While speaking with the officer the complainant stated that someone had stolen the trailer hitch from the back of his pickup the previous night.
On Tuesday, 11/02/2021, officers received a report of fraud. While speaking with our team, the complainant stated that in late October she received a telephone call from someone claiming to be an employee of the Norton Security Company. The complainant further stated that the scammer claimed she owed them money and that it needed to be paid back in gift cards. The scammer then threatened the complainant by stating that if she did not cooperate, her bank account would be hacked and the company would take the money owed. The complainant was subsequently scammed out of $12,500 in gift cards from Lowe’s and Target. As we go forward, please remember that reputable companies will not demand payment in gift cards or threaten to hack your bank account. If you believe you’re being targeted by a scammer, stop the conversation and hang up immediately.
