Woman Arrested During Investigation Into “Orange Crush” Beach Attack
May 4, 2023
(Tybee Island, GA) A 22-year-old woman has been arrested for Aggravated Assault and Robbery following an attack that occurred on the beaches of Tybee Island during the unpermitted “Orange Crush” event.
On Saturday, April 22, 2023, officers of the Tybee Island Police Department responded to the beach, near the Tybee Island Pier and Pavilion, in reference to a report of a fight. Upon their arrival, the officers found a woman being cared for by several bystanders. Closer inspection revealed that the woman had significant injuries to her face and appeared to have been badly beaten. While speaking with the officers, the woman indicated that she and her adult daughter had been attacked by a group of people while on the beach. The woman also stated that her purse had been stolen during the attack, and that her daughter was still missing. At that time, two officers took the woman to a safe location to receive medical treatment, while a third officer walked out onto the beach and retrieved her daughter.
On Monday, April 24, 2023, detectives of the Tybee Island Police Department became aware of another woman, identified as 22 year old Jasmine Murphey, who was sharing videos of the brutal attack across social media. In those posts, Murphey implicated herself as a suspect while making a statement to the effect of “leaving her footprint on Tybee Island”. Warrants were subsequently secured for her arrest, and one of the videos was posted to the Tybee Island Police Department Facebook page in an attempt to identify other suspects. That post has since been shared over 6,000 times.
On Thursday, May 4, 2023, officers of the College Park Police Department (GA) located Murphey at her place of employment and placed her under arrest on the charges of Aggravated Assault and Robbery.
The men and women of the Tybee Island Police Department would like to thank the social media community, and their friends at the College Park Police Department for all of their assistance in this case.
The investigation is still ongoing. If you have any pertinent information about the attack, or if you know the identity of additional suspects, please call the Tybee Island Police Department at (912)786-5600. Thank you.
