In the early morning hours of Monday, September 26th, officers responded to the area of 14th Street in reference to a domestic disturbance. While speaking with the victim, officers learned that the suspect had driven away prior to our team’s arrival. At that time, officers on scene broadcast a description of the suspect vehicle to those still on patrol. Shortly thereafter, an officer spotted the vehicle in question and performed a traffic stop. While speaking with the suspect, the officer was able to smell an odor similar to that of an alcoholic drink emitting from within the vehicle. When asked about the smell, the driver attempted to explain it away by claiming that she had spilled wine on her pants earlier that evening. During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the driver had been operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. She was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with DUI (Less Safe).

On Tuesday, September 27th, one of our officers was on patrol when he stopped a vehicle on Highway 80 for a headlight violation. During the course of the stop, the officer learned that the driver had bought the vehicle approximately a year prior, but never purchased insurance coverage for it. The driver was then cited for the Headlight violation and No Insurance, while the vehicle was impounded with a hold placed until such time as the owner could prove it was properly insured.

Later that same day, another officer was monitoring traffic along Butler Avenue when he checked a vehicle’s speed at 61 mph in the 30 mph zone. During the course of the subsequent traffic stop, the officer learned that the driver’s license was suspended. He was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with both Speeding and Driving While License Suspended.

On Thursday, September 29th, officers responded to the area of Highway 80 in order to assist the Tybee Island Fire Department with a large brush fire in the median. Upon their arrival, officers blocked all lanes of traffic to ensure everyone’s safety, while firefighters extinguished the fire.

While still on scene for the brush fire, officers received a “be on the lookout” for a possible drunk driver approaching their location. After spotting the vehicle in question, officers noticed that it failed to maintain it’s lane several times as it continued eastbound on Highway 80. After stopping the vehicle, officers noticed that the driver’s speech was slurred and that there was a smell similar to that of an alcoholic drink that became stronger as she spoke. When asked about how much alcohol she had to drink that day, the driver denied drinking but stated that she had taken a couple of prescription medications. During the course of the subsequent investigation, officers found additional evidence to suggest that the driver had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and drugs. She was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Failure to Maintain Lane and DUI.
