On Thursday, 09/30/2021, one of our officers was monitoring traffic along Butler Avenue when he observed a vehicle that appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed. Using his Radar device, the officer checked the vehicle’s speed at 50 mph in a 30 mph speed zone. After conducting a traffic stop, the officer learned that the driver did not have a license. The driver was then placed under arrest and charged with Speeding and Driving While Unlicensed. Also on Thursday, one of our officers responded to the beach near 8th Street in reference to a report of an animal sacrifice. Upon his arrival, the officer found two roosters with their heads removed and plastic cups of blood lying in the sand. Similar sacrifices have been discovered on the beach several times in the past. Anyone with information about these incidents is encouraged to contact the Tybee Island Police Department. In the early morning hours of Saturday, 10/02/2021, officers responded to Hotel Tybee in reference to an intoxicated person in the elevator. Upon their arrival, officers found the man inside of the elevator and covered in vomit. Officers then spoke with the man in an attempt to determine where he was staying, to which he replied, “Right here. Just leave me”. When asked for his name and other identifying information, the man provided only a partial answers. During this time, officers learned that the man had a vehicle parked nearby and noted that his wallet was inside. When asked if officers could enter the truck to retrieve his wallet, the man replied, “Sure”. After collecting the wallet from inside the truck, officers found the man’s identification card and bags of white powder believed to be cocaine. The man was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Public Drunkenness, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Distribute. Later that same date, one of our officers was on patrol in the area of Butler Avenue when he saw a vehicle fail to yield the right of way to pedestrians in a marked crosswalk. After being stopped by the officer, the driver of the vehicle opened his door and vomited multiple times on the street. When asked if he was ok, the man indicated that he had too much to drink and handed the officer his keys while apologizing. During the course of the subsequent investigation, officers found additional evidence that the man had been operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with a Crosswalk Violation and Driving Under the Influence.
