• One of our officers was on foot patrol when he spotted a vehicle traveling the wrong way on Tybrisa Street. After stopping the vehicle, the officer noticed that there was a smell similar to that of an alcoholic drink emitting from within. During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the 20-year-old driver had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest and charged with Wrong Way on a One Way Street and DUI (Under 21).

    Later that day, one of our officers was on foot patrol in the area of Tybrisa and Butler, when he spotted a vehicle approaching at a high rate of speed. As he watched, the vehicle sped through the intersection, almost striking a pedestrian in the process. The officer then returned to his patrol car, caught up to the vehicle, and initiated a traffic stop. While speaking with the driver, the officer noticed that his eyes were bloodshot and that there was an odor similar to than of an alcoholic drink emitting from his body. When asked for his license, the driver handed the officer a debit card instead. During the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer found additional evidence to suggest that the man had been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was then placed under arrest and charged with Too Fast for Conditions, Crosswalk Violation and DUI.

    That evening, officers responded to a local restaurant in reference to a report of credit card fraud. During the course of the investigation, officers learned that the restaurant had received a to-go order that had been paid for with stolen credit card information. Officers then waited on scene until the suspect arrived to pick up the order. After speaking with the suspect about the incident, the officers placed him under arrest and charged him with Financial Transaction Card Fraud.

  • At approximately 7:25 PM, the Tybee Island Police Department received a 911 call In reference to a possible shooting. At that time, the caller stated that he had been shot by an unknown suspect and was currently on his way to a hospital via private vehicle. While speaking with communications personnel, the driver of the vehicle decided to pull over, allowing our officers to respond and make contact with the occupants. During the course of the initial investigation, our officers learned that the alleged suspect was actually the driver of the vehicle. The suspect was subsequently taken into custody and the victim was transported to a hospital for medical treatment.

    While speaking with our team, the suspect indicated that before encountering the police, he had pulled over and discarded the firearm in a wooded area along Highway 80. Armed with this information, officers were able to successfully recover the weapon with the help of the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office K9 unit.

    The suspect was then booked into custody on the charges of Aggravated Assault, Reckless Conduct, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime, Tampering with Evidence and Discharging a Firearm Near a Street or Highway.

  • Officers responded to a local restaurant after an unattended firearm was found in the restroom. The weapon was then taken into police custody and placed into our evidence room for safekeeping.

    Officers responded to the area of Butler and Tybrisa in reference to a disagreement between an employee of a local bar and a patron attempting to enter the establishment. While speaking with officers, the patron stated that the bouncer had stopped him from entering the bar and asked to see his ID. The patron did not have his ID with him, but informed the bouncer that he was a “local”. When the bouncer continued to insist to see the man’s ID, an argument ensued. It was during that time, the patron claimed, that the bouncer threatened and “pushed” him. According to the bouncer, however, it was the patron who resorted to threats. In the end, officers mediated the situation, and the parties went their seperate ways.

  • Officers responded to a local vacation rental after a firearm had been found left in the bedroom unattended. The weapon was taken into police custody and placed into our evidence room for safekeeping.

  • One of our officers was on patrol in the North Beach parking lot, when he spotted two people sleeping in a vehicle in violation of Tybee Island City Ordinance. Upon investigating further, the officer noticed that the windows on the vehicle were rolled down and there was a odor of marijuana emitting from within. After waking the occupants, officers conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle. During that time, they found several jars of marijuana, what appeared to be hallucinogenic mushrooms and a white powder that field tested positive for Cocaine. They also found a glass pipe, straws, small baggies and a scale. Both of the vehicle’s occupants were then placed under arrest and charged with Sleeping in Public Areas, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Related Objects, Possession of a Controlled Substance (Psilocybin) and Possession of a Controlled Substance (Cocaine).

  • Just after 3:00 AM, officers responded to the 17th Street parking lot in reference to a possible theft. While speaking with our team, the victim stated that someone had gone into their vehicle, without permission, and stole her phone. The victim further stated that the phone had a wallet case attached, which included several personal items such as her driver’s license and debit card. It is unknown whether or not the vehicle was unlocked at the time of the theft.

  • One of our officers stopped a vehicle for speeding on Butler Avenue. While speaking with the driver, the officer noticed that he was not wearing a seatbelt. The officer also noticed that the man’s cellphone was playing a movie while lying in his lap. During the course of the investigation, the officer learned that the vehicle’s registration was expired and that the driver had an active warrant from another jurisdiction. He was then placed under arrest and charged with Speeding, Seatbelt Violation, Hands Free Violation, Expired Registration and Non-local warrant.
